A closure or a frontal? Start with the hairstyle you want. A closure covers a smaller section at the top or front of an install. A frontal covers a wider area across the front hairline, giving you more space to work with at the front.
Neither is automatically the better choice. If a smaller lace piece gives you the part and coverage you need, a closure may be enough. If your style needs a wider hairline area, consider a frontal.
What is a closure?
A closure is a lace piece with hair attached, used to finish part of a sew-in or wig. Common size labels include 4×4, 5×5 and 6×6 inches.
Your part needs to sit within the usable lace area. If you usually wear a center part or a particular side part, show your stylist where you want it before choosing the size.
What is a frontal?
A frontal is a wider lace piece designed to cover the front hairline area. Common labels include 13×4 and 13×6 inches.
The extra width can be useful when you want more styling room across the front. Fit and construction still matter, though. A frontal does not guarantee an invisible hairline or a part anywhere you choose.
How they compare

| Closure | Frontal | |
|---|---|---|
| Coverage | A smaller top or front section | A wider area across the front hairline |
| Common sizes | 4×4, 5×5, 6×6 inches | 13×4, 13×6 inches |
| Parting space | Within the closure’s usable lace | Across a wider front area, within the usable lace |
| Upkeep | Depends on fit and attachment | Depends on fit and attachment; the wider hairline area may need more attention |
What do the size labels mean?

The two numbers generally describe approximate lace width and depth in inches, not the length of the hair.
- 4×4 closure: approximately four inches wide and four inches deep.
- 5×5 closure: approximately five inches wide and five inches deep.
- 6×6 closure: approximately six inches wide and six inches deep.
- 13×4 frontal: approximately thirteen inches wide, with a listed depth of four inches.
- 13×6 frontal: approximately thirteen inches wide, with a listed depth of six inches.
Usable lace is not always a full rectangle. The depth at the sides can differ from the center, so check the exact construction if you need a deep side part.
Choose around your routine
Tell your stylist how you want to wear the hair and how much time you want to spend maintaining it. Ask how the piece will be secured and what you will need to do between appointments.
A closure or frontal sold on its own is not automatically a ready-to-wear glueless wig. Likewise, a frontal’s front coverage does not mean you have lace around the back for every ponytail or updo.
Match it to your bundles
Check the texture, color, quality selection and hair length of both pieces. For a bundle-and-lace set, confirm the bundle lengths and the lace piece’s type, size and length before ordering.
“HD” describes the lace; it does not tell you whether the piece is a closure or frontal. Compare those details separately from the Raw or Virgin quality selection.
