You find a hairstyle you love, check the length and order the same number of inches. Then it arrives, and the length looks different. Texture is often part of the reason: waves and curls can make hair look shorter than it does when gently extended.
The best starting point is a reference photo in the texture you actually want to wear. Then use a tape measure and talk through the finished cut with your stylist.
Think about how you will wear it

Straight, wavy and curly hair can fall differently even when the listed length is the same. Many sellers measure textured hair with the strands gently extended. Check the measurement method for your selected product rather than assuming the curls will reach that point when relaxed.
| Texture | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Straight | A reference with a similar cut and installation position. |
| Body Wave or Loose Wave | How far the hair falls with the waves in place, rather than brushed or straightened out. |
| Deep Wave, Water Wave or Kinky Curly | The relaxed shape and the extended measurement. A straight-hair length chart will not show both. |
| Kinky Straight | The texture in the finish you want to wear, including any planned heat styling. |
There is no fixed number of extra inches to add for every curly texture. A looser wave and a tighter curl need different references.
Measure from the right place

Where the hair sits on your head changes where the ends fall. A bundle installed lower down will not land at the same point as one placed closer to the crown.
- Choose your texture. Save a photo showing the finish you want.
- Check the placement. Ask your stylist where the wefts or lace piece will sit.
- Measure toward your target length. Use a flexible tape measure from the planned position to where you want the ends to fall.
- Discuss the cut. Allow for any shaping, layers or trimming your stylist plans to do.
This gives you a useful estimate. It will not predict the exact way a curl will sit or replace the product’s own measurements.
Why “waist length” is not one size
Your height and torso length affect where the hair lands. The same inch length can sit above the waist on one person and lower on another. Use body-length descriptions as a visual reference, then check your own measurements.
Matching lengths or mixed lengths?
A mixed set such as 16/18/20 inches can give your stylist a starting point for a layered shape. Matching lengths can be useful when planning a fuller outline before cutting. Neither choice guarantees the final look on its own; placement and shaping still matter.
If you are adding a closure or frontal, choose its length separately. Also check how much bundle hair you need for your preferred fullness, especially when moving to longer lengths.
Before you order
Confirm the texture, measurement method and longest length in the set. If you are using a photo as your reference, ask whether it shows the hair relaxed, extended or styled. Plan any cutting in advance and check the return conditions before altering the hair.
